The New Benchmark in Vinyl Enjoyment: AVM Rotation R 30.3


„After a period of maturation, the manufacturer based in Malsch, Baden-Württemberg, completes its 30th-anniversary series with a turntable that can only be referred to as an entry-level model within the AVM hierarchy, as it is packed with a wealth of elaborate, high-quality technology in a limited offering of 30 sets. The belt-driven player features several elements that reflect the developers’ commitment to providing customers with durable and sonically convincing products. While many manufacturers opt for simple plastic for the motor pulley, this one is made from precision-turned metal. In any case, this choice of material conveys a heightened sense of value. The actual platter, which is split in two and weighs two kilograms, is made from resonance-dampening, stress-free acrylic and is subtly illuminated in white. With the push of a button, the desired speed of 33 or 45 revolutions can be selected, although there is no fine adjustment for the speed. Instead, an electronic “Look-Forward-Servo-Control” is designed to ensure precise adherence to the target speed. Once the circuit has accurately locked in the speed—taking only a moment—the previously blinking blue LED on the speed selector switches to a constant glow. The upside-down bearing is built with the promise of precision and maintenance-free operation. The sandwich chassis, standing on four height-adjustable damping feet, is made from a 35-millimeter thick, highly compressed, painted HDF fiberboard, reinforced at the front with an aluminum plate. Dust is kept at bay by the included sturdy acrylic cover, although we would still recommend removing it during operation to avoid providing sound waves with additional, potentially sound-degrading surfaces. Upon closer inspection of the turntable, it becomes evident that owner Udo Besser and his team have gone above and beyond in equipping the drive with components that defy the price range of the package. One might suspect that some clever calculations were necessary to accommodate the tonearm from the larger model R 2.3, which retails for around 4000 euros without a cartridge, here at a more accessible price point. The gimbal-mounted 9-inch arm, made from polished aluminum and weighing 13.5 grams, harmonizes with the majority of cartridges and can be finely adjusted in all parameters, including tonearm height and azimuth, while the skating force is traditionally corrected via thread and a small weight. Adjusting the tracking force requires a tonearm scale, as unfortunately, there is no scale visible on the silicone-damped counterweight. The included cable connects to the amplifier via RCA jacks.“

AVM R 30.3: A Sound Wonder for Vinyl Lovers


„The 30.3 is not a reduction of audiophile values, but a compression. The defining element of sound seems not to be the turntable itself, but the superb tonearm. It had precision yet retained the charm and typical passion for vinyl. This time not in black pressing, but in shimmering yellow. I acquired the new album by Eric Clapton, “The Lady In The Balcony.” A double album with the subtext that Clapton plays away his loneliness during lockdown. It features the heroic deeds of the past in a small guise – including “Layla” and “Tears in Heaven.” My personal album of the month. The 30.3 combination immediately recognized the charm of the recordings. It was intimate, perfectly spatial. The dynamics of the guitar strings were fantastic – they leapt from the plane directly into our hearts. Along with the chiseled voice of the master. I sensed this. That’s why we also listened to the album in high-res on our Technics SL-G700. It was also heart-wrenching but not as relaxed and human as the vinyl record. One more round. Something seemingly offbeat. Bert Kaempfert became a wealthy man in the 1960s through elegant big band sound and true strokes of genius in composition. “Spanish Eyes” is by him, as well as “Strangers In The Night.” Those who dismiss this as banal entertainment music miss out on something. Because the arrangements, conducted by the master himself (“Today & Yesterday”), sound exquisite on fresh 180 grams. A turntable must be able to time. It’s magnificent how the AVM captures the deeper groove. A space with defined reverb, the strings sharp, the bass powerful – such a pull emanates from this record. In the best moments, one wants to stand up and sway along.“
